You are about to start a new business? Great! But now you need to get a logo. There are a lot of good logos, some very good logos and just a few really awesome ones. We believe that you are planning to get the one from the last category, right? Then you need to think about many things that will make your new logo really great.
What’s in the name?
First of all, you need to come up with a great name for your business. Once it is done, you should reflect about all the meaning you are putting in it so that to come up with a great idea for your logo. Don’t be too obvious and if your business is called, for example, Blue Bird, it is too straightforward to have a simple image of a blue bird as a logo.
Check the trends but not depend on them
When you buy new clothes, you obviously want to look smart and in vogue. So you check the latest trends, but very unlikely you strictly follow all of them. If not, you may look too much unnatural – trendy, but not always suiting you and your personality.
The same works for logos. It is good to check contemporary tendencies but your logo should be unique. Also keep in mind that trends are always changing, so if you choose a more trendy rather than a more classic logo, you should be able to upgrade it from time to time. Otherwise you will look old-fashioned after some time.
Colors matter
Most of the logos have several colors apart from black and white. Professional designers recommend to include 2-3 matching colors in the logo. However, you need to remember that your logo can be printed in black and white and it should look nice in that case as well. Creating an additional black and white version will ensure you have a print-friendly logo that looks fine.
Be flexible
Apart from colorful and black and white versions of the logo, it can be used in different sizes, from an epic landing page to a thumbnail-sized mark on a booklet. Obviously, your logo should look perfect in any of these sizes. Moreover, it is advisable to have a logo that looks nice both on light and dark backgrounds. Taking all the cases in consideration will help you in the long-run.
Additionally, if your logo consists both of an image (logo mark) and a name/slogan (logotype), it can be sometimes used separately, i.e. only logo mark or only logotype. So while creating a logo it is important to consider these options and make both of them nice-looking and easily recognizable.
Be universal
If your target audience is quite broad, from kids to retirees, your logo should appeal to people with very various tastes. So along with being unique the logo should be universal, i.e. it should look appealing for most of your customers. Remember such great examples like Apple, Coca-Cola, Nike or Nivea. But if your audience is very homogeneous, for example, audience of music band Gorillaz or Barbie toys, your logo can have a style that appeals to this particular group of people, but which may look less appealing to others, those who are not your target audience.
Be professional
Finally, be professional. That’s really important. Even though you have read all our advices, it is quite difficult to create something really awesome yourself.
