With a lot to say and very little space to express yourself, the new lingo on the block is definitely your thing.
With computers and internet becoming accessible to the vast cross section of the society, the use of the English language has also undergone significant change. If you are of this generation, then the influence of the lingo of the social networking media is bound to affect the way you communicate. You may ask how? Well, here it is.
Let us consider Twitter. The tweeting rule states that a user has to tweet, or in other words express whatever he/ she wants to in a mere 140 words. Now a head buzzing with loads of stuff to share may not and often does not find the word limit enough. And the ‘limited’ stock of acronyms does not really express the feelings in a way you would like. So, what can you do? Invent, of course. Shrink entire phrases and idioms to a form which is cool and also lets others understand whatever it is that you want to say and lo! The all new uber cool lingo is born.
The New Set of Expressions
Now that you know that the English language has changed to accommodate the all new social networking language, then what comes next? Know and understand the terms of course. Imagine a situation, where you are in a group and people next to you start speaking in a language that includes things like “OMG”, “LOL”,”SMH”, and the like. You wouldn’t want to be left gaping at others or loose thread of the conversation in trying to figure out what it was all about. Isn’t it better to know about these words, instead of RME (Rolling My Eyes!) in your head?
Among the hordes of expressions doing the round, the one that is quite popular and frequently used is “OMG”, short for “Oh My God”. The moment someone feels the urge to squeal out their disgust or surprise at certain thing, shouting out the acronym instead of the whole phrase has become the trend of the day. Social Networking media are also more often than not flooded with posts starting with “OMG” (RME!). Another expression that has now become a trend is “IMO”, or “In My Opinion”. As is obvious, people use it when they want to tell others what they think about a certain issue, more often about someone.
There are some expressions that specifically cater to those who are on Twitter. What are they? Expressions like RT for Retweet, MT for Modified Tweet, SubTweet to denote tweeting about someone behind that person’s back, “# (Hashtag)” which allows the users to follow and remain updated about the latest events on the block and the like.
Previously it was the instant messaging and chat rooms that had ruled the dictionary of the internet users. That has now undergone a change and the “internet slang” has now been converted into the “social media slang”. And so funny incidents do not make us roll on the floor in laughter anymore; they make us ROFL!
